Iyengar Yoga is a method of teaching of Hatha Yoga developed by a living yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar using yoga asanas (postures) to create meditation in action.  The principles are:

1.
Emphasis on standing poses helps to develop strength, stability, stamina, concentration, and body alignment.

2.  Attention to detail makes the poses more effective and safe.  It trains the mind to focus and penetrate deeper into the body achieving greater stability in the pose, calmer mind and self understanding.

3.  Use of props and alignment principles allows yoga to be accessible to anyone regardless of age or condition.

4.   Sequencing of the poses produces different effects such as energizing, calming and strengthening.

5.  Use of yoga to ease various physical ailments and special conditions (i.e., pregnancy, headaches, knee, back, shoulder problems, high blood pressure, stress).

Iyengar teachers are trained to give individual instructions and adjustments as needed and to accommodate students with musculoskeletal and other problems.

“We are truly not just moving our bodies but our whole beings — I have much greater awareness of how I move and breathe. I am better equipped to slow myself down and ‘cool it’ which is frequently necessary in our stressed lives.”

— Audrey, Iyengar Yoga student
